The history of Harlow has long been associated with religion, quite a lot of the land that makes up Harlow as we now know it, was owned by the Bishops of Waltham.

Two priories also existed within the Harlow area;Cannons and Latton
Parndon Abbey, established by Premonstratensian Cannons of Newhouse Lincolnshire.
In 1180 they moved away, the land remained their property, known as Manor of Cannons, (Parndons)
Latton Priory, established by Augstianian Cannons, first mentioned 1230.
Two Churches existed by late the Saxon period, St Mary at Latton and St Andrews at Netteswell.

In 1562 the land of Latton Priory was purchased by Sir James Altham.

When the new town of Harlow was built the existing churches couldn't cope with the sudden increase in population, "common rooms" (community halls) were used as places of worship, this enabled many lesser known faiths to flourish with the town.

The historical references contained in this site are a very condensed version, as the history of Harlow churches goes back many centuries

I am not an historian and the site would become too large for me to cope with.

The sources of information for this site were:

I haven’t managed to take photos of all of the churches in Harlow, only 25 of them.

I don’t want to offend any religion, gradually I’ll try and get photos of all the denominations churches, where it is possible to take a photo.
