Wartime Airfields near Harlow
Lots of photos of old airfields, you might ask what has old airfields to do with Harlow today, some of the airfields are impacting on life today in Harlow.
Matching Airfield has provided extra storage facilities for local companies for many years, plus research testing.
North Weald airfield provides one of the largest weekend markets in the South East, plus it still has an operational airfield.

The largest WW2 airfield is 9 miles away although it's not covered by the Wartime Airfields site;

In 1984 the government gave Stansted airport approval for expansion to accommodate a larger number of passengers, it is now Britain's 4th largest Airport.

Route to Staple Tye video
This
takes you on the A414 in to Harlow from the M11 roundabout then along Southern Way to Staple Tye Harlow, judging by the traffic it was a very quiet day.
The authorities have just announced they are going to spend another £10 million widening the A414 into Harlow.
It's a bit of a shame they didn't do this a few years ago when they caused havoc working on the same bit of road.
On their new plan they want to remove the roundabout at the junction of Southern Way and the A414 and replace it with traffic lights. Map
We all know how well they work on the A414 (Edinburgh Way ) where over 1 mile jams are normal, caused by the two new sets of traffic lights.Map
Another example; the bus lane traffic lights on Second Avenue, (near Town Centre) causing traffic jams way back, reaching the M11. In 2008 they were switched off for months while modifications were made to Second Avenue, traffic flowed using the roundabout, slowly but it moved. Map
Older people might have memories of when the authorities put traffic lights on the Northern A414 junction with Hertfordshire at Burnt Mill roundabout. Map
The lights managed to cause traffic jams and chaos throughout the town, villages around Harlow suffered an increase in traffic as people found other routes in and out of Harlow.
Eventually the authorities had to recognize their mistake and removed them.
A costly mistake, lets hope they don't repeat it. |
Google Photos of Harlow
MSN Photos of Harlow
Yahoo! photos of Harlow
All of the above search engines list loads of photos from Harlow, one of my favorites is the photo of the new cycle track (2007) with all of it's signs, over 100! Click Here talk about Health and safety madness, Essex County Council who were responsible have now removed many of the signs, though the sign posts still remain, providing exelent "fly posting" positions along the road.
In my opinion you would have to be mad to use the cycle track using their directions and layout .
A bit further along from the photo, on Elizabeth Way E.C.C. direct cyclists a curb stone away (about 5 inches) from on coming heavy goods vehicles with a strong cross wind blowing from the fields and golf corse pushing the cyclist even closer!
I suppose two wheeled thrill seekers might obey the county council directions, me, if I was that desperate, I'd go to Rye House Speedway about 3 miles away and see if they'd let me have a go. |

Another large site with loads of photos, I found it a bit strange on the geography though, I looked at a neighbouring town page to find Harlow wasn't listed with any of our neighbours, only towns miles away!
