About the photos

roysharlow.co.uk did have a large pub section, it was getting a bit old and tired, the decision was made to close it, then in 2006 the football World Cup came along, with all the media hype, we were going to make the final, this would our year to win....or so we thought.
This prompted an idea, David Beckham was the England captain, Mr and Mrs Beckham's English home in Sawbridgeworth is on the borders of Harlow, it's just down the road from me, yes me, with thousands of others that can call ourselves neighbours, ..........well sort of.
With so many pubs showing Football on the TV I wondered how many would be flying the English flag, especially as David Beckham was the captain.

I set out to photo all of the Harlow pubs and village pubs around Harlow.
Taking photos of 60 pubs scattered around shouldn't be hard, I'd done it before for the original site, after all they don't move around, the problem arises when to take the photos.
The crack of dawn should be best as the pubs wouldn't be open, the pub car parks wouldn't be full of cars, delivery vans wouldn't be in shot.
The day, probably a Sunday, pubs open later and no deliveries,I've just got to hope for good light on a Sunday morning.
One big difficulty is the weather, if it's raining everything would look dark and miserable, if it's sunny the chances are the only photo shot would be into the sun early in the morning, I guessd there would be many call backs to take the photo when the sun had moved round a bit.
In reality I had only one chance to take the photo as the pubs with England flags wouldn't be there for ever.
I had a few weeks in the World Cup tournament to take the photos, family commitments and weather conspired to stop me with my task,
unfortunately the England team didn't live up to the media hype, we were knocked out.
Now I faced the task of trying to get all of the remaining photos in one take on the Sunday morning after we were knocked out, inevitably quite a few photos were rubbish, so the idea died a death, until now.
I've decided to make the best of a bad job and publish the photos at a small size (in the pub index) so the quality is harder to view.

I wondered which pub flying the English flag would be closest to Mr Beckhams home, could it be Harlow Mill, or The Hand and Crown in Sawbridgeworth?
No, neither of these pubs showed any sign of a flag, it was the White Horse in Old Harlow that was the closest pub.
